A Louisiana couple recently experienced a rude awakening when they discovered an unexpected and unwelcome houseguest-an alligator. Don and Jan Schultz had recently relocated from Arizona to New Iberia, Louisiana, and little did they know that their new home would come with such a surprising surprise.

According to ABC, it all started when the couple's Australian cattle dog, Panda, began barking frantically, alerting them to something out of the ordinary. Concerned, Don Schultz decided to investigate, thinking that perhaps an intruder had made their way into their home. Little did he expect what he was about to encounter.

Making his way down the hall, Don Schultz found himself face-to-face with a 5-foot alligator. The reptile had managed to enter the home through the doggy door, according to a report from Lafayette ABC affiliate KATC.

The couple was shocked by the presence of the unwelcome guest, and their immediate concern was for their safety. Wasting no time, the Schultz family called 911, seeking assistance in dealing with the intruding alligator.

Officers from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries swiftly responded to their call and managed to capture the reptile. The relieved couple expressed their appreciation for the swift action by law enforcement and wildlife officials.

Surprise Encounter: Louisiana Couple Awakens to Alligator Inside Their Home

"We are really grateful for the sheriffs and Wildlife and Fisheries that came and so thoroughly dispatched the creature from our house," Jan Schultz told KATC.

With the alligator removed from their home, the couple could finally breathe a sigh of relief. However, they were determined to prevent any future surprises.

Taking precautions to secure their home and ensure their peace of mind, the Schultz family invested in a pet door lock that operates exclusively with Panda's collar. This new safety measure ensures that only their furry friend can access the house, effectively minimizing the risk of further encounters with unexpected wildlife.

"We are taking precautions and putting a locking dog door in now that only unlocks with the dog's collars, so we won't have this surprise in the future," Don Schultz explained to KATC.

By proactively addressing the issue, the Schultz family aims to create a safer environment for themselves and prevent any potential risks posed by wildlife in their area. While the Schultz family successfully resolved the alligator intrusion, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has yet to provide an official comment regarding the incident, despite ABC News' request for information.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unique challenges faced by residents in regions where wildlife can encroach upon residential areas. It underscores the importance of being prepared and taking the necessary precautions to ensure personal safety and the security of one's home.

As the Schultz family settles into their new home, they can now rest a little easier knowing that their pet door is equipped with an added layer of security. Their proactive approach serves as a valuable lesson for others living in areas where encounters with local wildlife are not uncommon.

With the support of local authorities and their own vigilance, the Schultz family managed to turn a potentially dangerous situation into a cautionary tale. Their experience highlights the importance of promptly addressing unexpected wildlife encounters and taking steps to safeguard one's home.

As they continue to adjust to their new surroundings, the Schultz family can take solace in the fact that their pet door is now fortified against any uninvited guests, ensuring a safer and more tranquil living environment for themselves and Panda.
