In a remarkable display of compassion and determination, a 10-year-old boy named Izmir Kassam from Calgary embarked on a challenging mission to raise funds for earthquake relief. Inspired by his love for running and a deep desire to help those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, Izmir ran a total of 100 kilometers over the course of several months. His incredible effort has raised more than $18,000 for the Humanitarian Coalition, providing much-needed support for the affected regions.
Izmir Kassam's Inspiring Journey: Ten 10-Kilometer Runs for a Worthy Cause
According to CBC Kids, Izmir's journey began on February 6, which also marked his 10th birthday. Coincidentally, it was the same day that a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, causing widespread destruction and claiming numerous lives. Disturbed by the news, Izmir was determined to make a difference. Together with his father, he devised a plan to run 10 kilometers ten times, symbolizing his age, and transform his passion for running into a fundraising initiative for earthquake victims.
From February to June, Izmir diligently pursued his goal, completing each 10-kilometer run with unwavering dedication. On June 10, he concluded his final leg, having accomplished a remarkable feat for a young boy. Through his perseverance and commitment, Izmir has managed to surpass his initial fundraising target, with over $18,000 raised for the Humanitarian Coalition's emergency response campaign in Turkey and Syria.
When asked about his motivation, Izmir revealed that he felt a special connection to the affected regions as he was named after a city in Turkey. Witnessing the tragic aftermath of the earthquake on the news served as a catalyst for his desire to help. Despite the physical challenges he faced during his runs, Izmir drew strength from the knowledge that his efforts were making a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
The Humanitarian Coalition commended Izmir for his outstanding efforts. Richard Morgan, the executive director of the organization, expressed his admiration, stating, "Izmir has given us a wonderful example of the difference that one person can make to help others in their time of need."
Calgary Community Rallies Behind Izmir's Fundraising Efforts for Earthquake Relief
For his final run, Izmir received tremendous support from his schoolmates and the local Turkish community. With the help of his father and volunteers from the Canadian Turkish Cultural and Islamic Centre in Calgary, an event was organized to celebrate his accomplishment. Sponsors were secured, enabling the creation of matching T-shirts for Izmir's supporters. Approximately 30 people, including classmates, teachers, and members of the Turkish community, gathered to cheer him on and even ran alongside him for part of the route.
Kim Forgay, Izmir's teacher, spoke highly of his determination and the support he received from the school community. She emphasized the excitement and pride felt by his classmates throughout the fundraising journey. Izmir expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support, noting that it brought him immense joy to see so many people rallying behind his cause.
Izmir's selfless act of running 100 kilometers to raise funds for earthquake relief serves as a shining example of the positive impact that even one individual can have on a community in need. His determination, compassion, and unwavering spirit have touched the hearts of many and provided hope for those still recovering from the earthquake's aftermath. As the affected regions continue their journey towards healing and rebuilding, Izmir's contribution stands as a testament to the power of empathy and the potential within each of us to make a difference in the world.
