A seemingly innocent bruise beneath the eye of 13-month-old Harper Walker took a harrowing turn for her parents, Jenny Huddart and Adam Walker, when it led to a shocking diagnosis.
In February 2023, the couple noticed a small dark tinge under Harper's right eye, which gradually developed into a full black eye over the course of a couple of weeks. Concerned but initially not alarmed, they observed that Harper's eye changed shape and appeared misaligned with the other eye after four weeks.

Despite her usual cheerful disposition, Jenny and Adam, both teachers, decided to seek medical advice and took their daughter to the GP, accoding to Metro.
However, the doctor didn't seem concerned about the bruise. Undeterred, the worried parents revisited the GP a few weeks later, only to be asked to return in two more weeks. Feeling uneasy about the situation, Jenny took the initiative and requested a referral to an eye specialist, which was scheduled for the end of April.
Before the appointment with the eye specialist could take place, the situation escalated when Harper's eye became even more misaligned. Fearing for their daughter's health, Jenny and Adam contacted the helpline 111, and they were advised to take her to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. Following the A&E visit, Harper was referred to the eye hospital, where scans, tests, and consultations with the oncology team were conducted.
A few days later, the devastating results were delivered: Harper was diagnosed with stage four, high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that originates from immature nerve cells in various parts of the body, per Mayo Clinic.
In Harper's case, the cancer had originated in her adrenal gland on her kidney and had already spread to her limbs, ribs, hips, skull, and bone marrow.
According to Independent, the news left Jenny and Adam in utter shock, struggling to come to terms with the reality of their daughter's diagnosis. A profound sense of disbelief followed the initial shock, as if the world had momentarily stopped around them. Harper immediately began her treatment, which included chemotherapy that she would continue until later that month. Following the chemotherapy, she would undergo surgery to remove the tumor from her kidney.

After this initial phase of treatment, Harper faced further challenges, including high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell harvesting. Doctors explained that once the intensive chemotherapy was complete, Harper's harvested stem cells would be returned to her to aid in the growth of new, healthy blood cells.
The treatment regimen would also include radiotherapy to target the original site of the cancer-the kidney-to prevent its recurrence. Finally, Harper would undergo immunotherapy to identify and destroy cancer cells.
Throughout the arduous journey, Harper's indomitable spirit shone through. Despite losing her hair early in the treatment process, she remained welcoming and smiley, endearing herself to the nursing team. The family's support was unwavering, with Adam even taking the time to gently remove Harper's loose hair by hand, sparing her the distress of a haircut.
As Harper bravely endured her treatment, her family anxiously awaited updates on her progress. The next steps depended on the outcome of her scans and assessments. Regardless of the challenges Harper faced, her parents affirmed that she remained her vibrant self, a beacon of hope amidst the trials of neuroblastoma. While the road to recovery would be long and difficult, Jenny and Adam were determined to stay strong for their daughter, offering her all the love and support she needed to fight the formidable battle ahead.
