A harrowing outbreak of Listeria has caused three deaths and sent three others to the hospital in Tacoma, Washington, shaking the community to its core. Health officials have identified poorly cleaned ice cream machines at a local Frugals restaurant as the source of the contamination, as revealed in an official announcement from the Washington State Department of Health.

Investigators determined that the ice cream machines at the Frugals restaurant, which were in operation until August 7, were the source of the bacterial outbreak. Listeria can affect individuals for a protracted period-up to 70 days after exposure-making it crucial for patrons who visited the restaurant between May 29 and August 7 to be on high alert for symptoms and to consult healthcare providers urgently if symptoms are observed.

Scope of Exposure and High Risk

CNN reached out to the Frugals restaurant chain for a statement, but no response has been received as of yet. However, according to the health department, no other locations of the Frugals chain are currently implicated in the ongoing Listeria outbreak.

Six individuals were initially hospitalized for Listeria exposure after consuming milkshakes at the Tacoma Frugals between February 27 and July 22. Genetic tests confirmed that the Listeria strain found in the milkshakes matched the strain responsible for the hospitalizations and tragic fatalities. Two of the survivors specifically recalled consuming milkshakes at the implicated Frugals outlet before falling seriously ill.

Symptoms of Listeria infection are diverse but often include fever, muscle aches, and various gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea. More severe symptoms can manifest as headaches, mental confusion, and even convulsions.

In response to this grave situation, the health department is urgently calling on anyone who dined at the Tacoma restaurant between May 29 and August 7 to seek immediate medical advice if they are experiencing any symptoms of a Listeria infection. Vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, older adults, infants, and those with compromised immune systems, should exercise heightened caution.

Public Health Warning and High-Risk Groups

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for about 1,600 cases of listeriosis in the United States annually. Of those, approximately 260 result in death. The CDC further indicates that pregnant women are 10 times more likely to contract listeriosis, and among pregnant Hispanic women, the risk is an astounding 24 times higher.

This deeply unsettling event highlights the absolute necessity for rigorous food safety measures across all food service establishments. Negligence in adhering to these protocols can result in severe consequences, impacting not just individual lives but also public confidence in food safety.

While the health department has not found evidence of contamination at other Frugals locations, the incident serves as a grim cautionary tale for all eateries and their customers. As the situation continues to unfold, the community is fervently praying for the recovery of the hospitalized victims and awaits further updates from the health authorities.

In the interim, the key to managing this public health crisis lies in heightened vigilance and immediate medical intervention, particularly for those who might have been exposed to the dangerous bacteria at the Tacoma Frugals restaurant.
