In an atmosphere already heavy with remembrance and loss, the city of Wilmington, Delaware, was, unfortunately, a witness to an additional tragedy this past weekend. A 3-year-old son of a firefighter met a tragic end, being fatally struck by a vehicle just as a memorial walk was about to commence, a walk organized to honor three brave Wilmington firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice seven years ago.
Gathering to Remember the Brave
Early on Sunday morning, off-duty firefighters from Wilmington, along with their families and friends, assembled in unity. The gathering was intended to remember and honor their colleagues-Lt.. Christopher Leach, Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes, and Senior Firefighter Ardythe lost their lives in a catastrophic structure fire on the same date in 2016. The memorial was a moment for reflection on bravery and sacrifice, a time to remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
However, this poignant gathering took a heart-wrenching turn. A vehicle unintentionally struck a young 3-year-old boy, the son of an off-duty firefighter, just as the memorial was about to begin. Another off-duty firefighter was driving the vehicle as he made an attempt to park in order to attend the memorial service. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to Wilmington Hospital, the young child's life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead. In respect to the grieving family, the names of the child and the driver have been withheld.
The Wilmington Police Department has since initiated a comprehensive investigation into this tragic incident and is actively seeking information from anyone who might provide insights into the unfolding of events. The community and local authorities are rallying together to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragedy and to offer unwavering support to the devastated family and the mourning community.
Community and Authorities Respond
Mayor Michael Purzycki of Wilmington visibly moved, issued a heartfelt statement on Monday, expressing his profound sadness at this additional tragedy befalling the firefighting community of Wilmington. He acknowledged the profound grief experienced by all, stating, "On an already somber day," the community has "once again found itself heartbroken, mourning a life taken much too soon."
This memorial walk was dedicated to the brave firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty during a horrific row house fire in the Canby Park neighborhood in September 2016. The fire led to the collapse of the first floor of the house, resulting in immediate fatalities and critical injuries. Beatriz Fana-Ruiz, the individual accused of igniting the fire, entered a guilty plea in 2019 to the charges of second-degree murder, arson, and assault. She received a sentence of 30 years in prison, with federal immigration authorities planning her deportation to the Dominican Republic upon completion of her sentence.
The additional tragedy of losing a young child under such circumstances adds an indescribable layer of sorrow to a community already bearing the heavy weight of loss and sacrifice. This incident underscores the fragility of life and highlights the coming together of a community united in grief.
