A 14-year-old boy unexpectedly opened fire, turning a usual bustling place into a scene of horror. This incident resulted in the tragic loss of two individuals, one being a Chinese and the other a Myanmar national. Moreover, five others sustained injuries, adding to the toll of this dreadful episode.
The Arrest and Suspect's Background
Local police were quick to react, managing to apprehend the young perpetrator, who was subsequently found with a weapon. The boy, after a series of preliminary questions, was confirmed to have underlying mental health issues and was, therefore, transferred to Rajvithee Hospital for evaluation and care.
While details about the youngster's background and motives remain limited, Thai Police General Torsak Sukvimol recognized the challenges of discussing the boy's personal life due to his age but did verify his ongoing mental health treatment.
The mall, a hub of activity and commerce, witnessed scenes of panic and chaos as the shots rang out. Eyewitnesses present during the terrifying moments shared their experiences, painting a picture of the sheer terror that ensued.
Shir Yahav, a 26-year-old visitor, told Reuters about the confusion: "We didn't understand what was happening. After hearing multiple gunshots, we took cover and blocked the store's door." Another witness, Susinee, 35, recounted the swift actions she and her colleagues took to evacuate a Japanese restaurant amidst the chaos.
The reason for this shocking crime is still under active investigation. Nonetheless, Thai Police General Torsak Sukvimol lauded the mall's security for their rapid and efficient response, especially considering the sheer number of people present during the peak hour incident, compounded by the rain outside.

The incident highlights a pressing concern in Thailand: the rise in gun ownership. Data from the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey in 2017 highlighted that an estimated 10.3 million civilians in the country own firearms.
