Last May, Disney confirmed that it will no longer be pushing through with the development of "Tron 3," according to Variety. The studio said that their movie slate has been filled up until 2018, and thus, there is no more room for a follow-up movie. But despite the bad news, "Tron's" lead star Garrett Hedlund, is still talking about the film as if the development is pushing through.
Hedlund recently spoke with Coming Soon while doing the promotions for his other movie, "Pan," with Hugh Jackman. The actor said that as far as he was aware, things were moving along pretty well for the development of "Tron 3," until the studio decided to pull the plug.
"Ever since [TRON] Legacy came out, they'd always wanted to get a concrete story for the next one. I knew that the new characters that we were introducing were going to be incredible," he said in the interview. "The script was really getting to a place to where everybody was getting really excited. The common comment was, 'This one's going to blow Legacy out of the water.' I was really excited for that."
Hedlund also said that everyone working on the film was "super excited" to go back to work especially with Joe Kosinski returning to direct "Tron 3" before Disney shelved the project. The actor isn't closing all doors, though, and in his mind, the project will materialize at some point.
"Maybe there'll be a time and a place for it. Maybe it will be resembling to the space that was in between from the '82 version to maybe I'll be... I'm going to be the Jeff Bridges in the next one and our press junkets, we'll be talking about how, 'It's been 30 years since I've been in that suit, man,'" he said.
Hedlund told the same thing a few weeks ago in an interview with Cinema Blend. The news outlet also suggested that had "Tron 3" proceeded with filming, it was set to become the start of a new trilogy.
According to Screen Rant, "Tron 3" was support to start screening this fall in Vancouver and there were earlier rumors that it would be called "Tron: Ascension."
"Tron: Legacy" starring Hedlund debuted in theaters in 2010, taking place 28 years after the original movie, "Tron," hit theaters in 1982. The old film starred Jeff Bridges and became a cult favorite, and Hedlund's character, Sam, was hinted to be the son of Bridges' character, Flynn.
