Weird Things Children Put in Their Ears and Noses

Children have the habit of putting things in their noses and ears. It may be amusing and dismissed as a prank by some but doctors warn that parents should not attempt to pry out these objects on their own and should seek proper medical help.

Here we bring you a list of bizarre and odd things that doctors have come across while pulling stuff out of children's ears and noses.

UK-based doctors from the Clear Ear Clinic (CEC) released a list of items that include mobile phones buttons, pebbles, hearing aid parts and garlic clove. The doctor treated a little girl who had a tooth in her ear because she 'wanted to keep it safe for the tooth fairy.'

Parent.com reported that a Colorado mother Jenni Southard noticed that her 11-month-old son, Cameron, had gulped down a piece of glass from a holiday decoration tree. "One day I heard coughing," Southard said. "I ran to the living room and noticed a piece of glass from our tree lights next to Cameron. He seemed fine, but I called my pediatrician, who said there wasn't much to be done beyond making sure he didn't have bloody stool." However, she found the glass in the baby's diaper without any blood.

In another case, doctors at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus found in an X-ray around 30 marbles in a child's digestive system. In such situations it is advisable to consult physician at the earliest.

A child was once treated for eating so much dust that it had congealed in his stomach into a ball and was obstructing his stomach, according to Dr Jim Schmidt, the cofounder of WellHomeCheck.org, a web site that talks about childproofing homes

Children are known to even shove finger foods up their noses rather than mouths. One doctor recalls pulling out a French fry from a nostril. Spaghetti and noodles seem to be another favorite with kids.

Parents cannot be too careful with toys also. Many toys pose choking hazards and have been recalled due to this risk. Toys with beads, small balls hanging threads or strings al are a no no.

Toys "R" Us recalled roughly 9000 Imaginarium Activity Walkers. 45,000 BabyTown pacifiers were recalled in 2008 due to choking hazard risk. Fisher Price's kick and Crawl, Little People's Wheelies Stand N play Rampway, Barbie Tough Trikes and Kawasaki Tough Trikes, all were recalled .

2.3 million Traiminic and Theraflu products were recalled after four children opened the caps and ingested the medicine

Young children are constantly exploring," said Joseph Wright, M.D., professor of pediatrics, emergency medicine, and health policy at George Washington University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, in Washington, D.C. to parents.com. "They're curious about their body and everything around them, so whatever they can reach is fair game for investigation," he added.
