In the heart of Dallas, young De'Evan McFall, an 11-year-old sports prodigy, held big dreams. He aspired to carve out a name for himself in either the NFL or NBA, a testament to his unmatched talent and dedication.
Everywhere he went, on and off the field, De'Evan's reputation preceded him. Byron Sanders, who had the privilege of coaching De'Evan's youth football team, the DeSoto Colts, often spoke of the youth's immense potential and commitment to the game.
Sanders reminisced, "De'Evan was such a powerhouse on the field that his name was well-recognized throughout our league. Rival teams, recognizing his talent, even made attempts to woo him over." The energetic young lad was just on the cusp of refining his boundless energy and inborn athleticism to truly shine in the league.
However, a dark cloud descended upon these dreams on January 15. An altercation involving a teenage girl and De'Evan's sister led to the young prodigy being inadvertently shot by a stray bullet. The teenage girl involved in the confrontation has been arrested and charged with murder.
Alarming US Gun Statistics
The enormity of gun-related deaths in the US casts a grim shadow over such individual tragedies. Shocking data from the Gun Violence Archive reveals that in 2023 alone, over 1,300 children and teenagers will have lost their lives to gun violence. Disturbingly, firearms ascended to the dubious distinction of being the primary killer of children and teenagers in 2020.
In response to this personal tragedy and to help manage funeral expenses and offer support to the grieving family, Vashunte Settles, De'Evan's devastated mother, launched a GoFundMe campaign.
Life hadn't always dealt De'Evan the best cards. From grappling with homelessness to managing an ADHD diagnosis, his challenges were manifold. Yet his spirit remained indomitable. Conscious of his family's limited financial means, the young sports enthusiast took the initiative to negotiate with coaches, securing scholarships or fee waivers. This proactive approach allowed him to be a part of multiple teams.
During his brief yet notable stint with the DeSoto Colts, De'Evan's talents didn't go unnoticed. He was swiftly appointed as team captain. Coach Sanders shared tales of the tight-knit bonds De'Evan nurtured with both his coaches and teammates, describing it as a sanctuary from the numerous challenges he confronted in life.
Expounding on De'Evan's influence and leadership, Sanders said, "He wasn't just a teammate. He was a role model. With his outspoken nature and never-ending enthusiasm, he consistently uplifted and motivated others."
More than Just Sports
Beyond the confines of the sports field, De'Evan was a force to be reckoned with. He was a natural entertainer with an innate ability to captivate audiences, whether he was rapping, dancing, or simply discussing music.
Shay Govan, who shared a deep bond with De'Evan as his godmother, painted a vivid picture of their relationship. She described the deep affection he held for her, often playfully asserting their unique connection by stating, "I see you as a second mother."
Govan and Settles, both of whom were central figures in De'Evan's life, fondly remember his unwavering love and constant reminders of his affection.
Govan shared, "His love was palpable. He'd always find moments to reassure those around him about how much he cared."
The way De'Evan approached life, even when surrounded by adversity, was nothing short of inspiring. Sanders summed it up best, stating, "In the game of life, De'Evan was dealt many challenging hands. But he played each with grace, resilience, and an unwavering spirit."
