Hollywood couple Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes recently celebrated their daughter's first birthday. More than just the birthday's uniquely low-profile character, the parenting style of the couple seems to be becoming "ridiculous," according to an insider who shared to OKMagazine.com.
“At her first birthday party, no one was allowed to bring in a camera and all photos of Esme were banned,” the insider told OKMagazine.com. “They had a professional photographer there and that was it.”
Esmeralda Amada, their daughter, was born Sept. 12, 2014. Her first birthday celebration, according to Entertainment Online, was held in their Los Angeles home, with only family and close friends as guests.
The guests included Mendes' sister Janet, and Gosling's mom Donna. Mandi, Gosling's sister, was also spotted entering the birthday celebration with a small homemade chocolate cake. There were no celebrities.
According to the insider, Mendes became a hygiene "maniac," having everyone “wash their hands before they can play with Esme.”
Shoes and other footwear also aren't allowed inside the house. “[Mendes] wants to minimize any outside germs being walked into the house,” the unnamed source said.
The birthday celebration was very low-profile. "It was a pretty quiet family affair," an eyewitness told ET. "There was no music or any sign of other babies or older kids."
The source added that although Gosling and Mendes are "both very good parents," the actress is a "helicopter mom" around her child. “She’s always hovering over Esme and never lets her out of her sight,” said the insider.
Pretty much this "helicopter mom" thing is because Mendes considers her daughter, according to Times of India, to be her "moral compass."
"I love being an example to somebody," said Mendes. "If I'm even like, 'Oh, what should I wear? Or, should I do this project?' "
"All I have to think about is my daughter and her face and I know the answer immediately," said the 41-year-old mom. "I guess she's my moral compass in a way. It's just beautiful to be an example for her."
Their daughter got her name from very familiar sources.
"Ryan and I both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame," said Mendes, "and we just think it's a beautiful name."
"Amada was my grandmother's name," the proud mom added. "It means 'beloved' in Spanish."
Apparently, they love their daughter so much. Mendes even revealed to Today that 34-year-old Gosling is a hands-on dad, who changes Esme's diapers.
Mendes said, "I mean, that's a given these days!"
