A Colorado mother, Kimberlee Singler, 35, allegedly killed two of her children and injured the eldest one after a Christmas custody decision did not favor her.
Colorado Mother Injures Children Over Unfavorable Christmas Custody Decision
Kimberlee Singler and her husband, Kevin John Wentz, have been separated for a while now and have been participating in family court to get custody of the children. Just before the holiday season, the Colorado mother was confronted with a decision that was not going to be favorable.'
The family court had decided to set a "makeup parenting time" plan, which allowed Wentz, the father of the kids, to be able to spend Christmas with their children. However, upon investigation, it appears from the records that this choice may have been a driving force behind the suspected killing of her own children.
During the early morning hours of December 19, police were called to Singler's condominium for a burglary report. At first, it was claimed that there had been a burglary, but it swiftly transformed into a scene of extraordinary sorrow. After the police were dispatched to the unit, they found the two children, aged 9 and 7, dead, while the 11-year-old was severely injured.
The Colorado Springs police department swiftly responded to the crime and issued a warrant for Singler's arrest, despite the fact that she had departed the county.
However, the Colorado mother was still arrested and is now in custody in the United Kingdom. It still remains unclear how she was able to flee to the UK immediately after the crime.
Years-Long Custody Battle
During the course of several years, Singler and her ex-husband, Kevin John Wentz, 38, had been engaged in a custody battle. As decided by the court, both parents will do a make-up parenting style this holiday.
The decision states that the children were scheduled to be handed over to Wentz at the Stetson Hills Division station of the Colorado Springs Police Department at 9 in the morning on December 16. It also stated the kids will be returned to Singler at noon on December 31.
However, the Colorado mother did not adhere to the agreement so Wentz requested an emergency action to the court the next day, December 17, and an officer to assist in enforcing parenting time. Following that, a hearing was scheduled for the 20th of December, which turned out to be the day after the murders.
Ira Cronin, who serves as the spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Police Department, informed the media that he would not provide any further commentary on the matter.
The mother on the other hand, was brought before the Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday for an extradition hearing, and the authorities in the United Kingdom confirmed she will be in jail until January 29.
Her appearance was brought about by the extradition hearing. Additionally, she did not give her approval for her to be brought back to the United States.
The police have reported that Singler's daughter, who is 11 years old, is doing well in her rehabilitation and that she is safe and accounted for here in the Colorado Springs region. The daughter is also said to be doing well in her recuperation.
