Roller Ball Candies Pose Dangers of Choking and Injuries in Kids: CPSC Warns

A federal safety agency issued a warning on Thursday regarding candy treats utilizing roller balls for dispensing sweet liquid, linking them to choking incidents, including one fatality, and advising against their use.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission highlighted that the rolling ball in the candy can dislodge and potentially block a child's airway.

Various Products on Roller Ball Candies Poses Danger

Recall announcements have been issued for various products, such as Cocco Candy Rolling Candy, associated with the death of a 7-year-old girl, and Happiness USA Roller Ball Candy, which led to the choking and hospitalization of a 7-year-old boy, both occurring last year.

Additionally, Slime Licker Sour Rolling Liquid Candy faced a recall of seventy million units in October.

The agency strongly advises consumers against purchasing or selling any candy of this type and recommends discontinuing the use and disposal of such products. Incidents related to this candy can be reported on www.SaferProducts.gov.

Roller Ball Candy Incident A Year Ago on Death of Child

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stated on Thursday that two candy manufacturers are recalling nationwide sold treats due to the presence of rolling balls that can separate and pose a choking danger to children.

The warning from the federal agency follows the deadly circumstances six months ago in New York, where a seven-year-old girl choked and passed away after a Cocco Candy Rolling Candy ball became detached and clogged in her throat.

Cocco Candy, based in Turkey, and KGR Distribution from Passaic, New Jersey, are recalling approximately 145,800 units of Cocco Candy Rolling Candy sold between May 2022 and March 2023, priced at about $2.50 each.

The recalled candies, available in flavors like sour strawberry, sour tutti frutti, and sour cola, contain two fluid ounces.

Parents and caregivers are urged to eliminate the candy from children's possession and contact the company for a refund. KGR can be contacted at 888-802-8823 or online at www.kgrcandies.com.

Another recall involves a similar product with the same potential danger, as stated by the CPSC. Carmel, Indiana-based Candy Dynamics is recalling 70 million units of Slime Licker Sour Rolling Liquid Candy sold at various retailers, including Walmart and Five Below, and online from June 2015 through July 2023.

Candy Dynamics received two reports of the rolling applicator ball detaching from the container, though no injuries were reported.

The recalled candy, manufactured in Spain and Colombia, was packaged in blue, red, green, and pink with labels reading "toxic waste" and "mega toxic waste."

Consumers can contact Candy Dynamics for a full reimbursement of unopened products. The company can be reached at 877-546-0483 or online at www.CandyDynamics.com.

These two candy brands are part of the 15 products recalled this year due to choking hazards for children, including a water beads activity kit recalled in September after the deadly passing of a 10-month-old child in Wisconsin, who swallowed one of the beads, which enlarges when ingested.
