5 Ways Halloween Makeup Can Harm Your Skin – Parents Beware!

Wearing makeup would be the easiest way to dress up for Halloween, and many parents are inclined to buy cheap makeup and prosthetics that are sold in many stores. They are conveniently everywhere and displayed just in time for the preparations.

But cheap doesn't always mean it is safe, as many of these Halloween makeup and costume kits may lead to allergic reactions and other serious skin conditions. What are these? Find out below:

1.) According to Safe Cosmetics Org, there are many carcinogens found in makeup, including children's face paint. High traces of lead are also present in children's cosmetics and mask, which can cause poisoning. According to CDC, lead poisoning can be entirely preventable if only parents take heed and enforce safeguards. Do a 24-hour patch test first before applying any makeup on your children's face or body part. If the test results to redness or itching, ditch the makeup entirely.

2.) Use of glue for fake eyelashes, beards and nails can be dangerous if applied improperly. Apart from causing an allergic reaction, these can permanently shut the eyes down. Others make use of Elmer's glue to attach tissue or other prosthetics on the face or body, but this is not formulated for the skin, according to Future Derm. If you need to use glue, use theater grade types that are especially made for the skin.

3.) Fake blood sold at stores are usually made of petroleum based ingredients that were once pinpointed as cancer-causing, according to the Office of the US Attorney General. Instead of using this, create homemade fake blood with ingredients found in your kitchen, according to Instructables.

4.) Wigs are made of rubber, vinyl and lead paint - all of which have toxic materials. When it comes in contact with the scalp, the sweating could lead to more absorption. Sharing wigs or other head gear may also lead to the spread of lice among the children. Instead, why not be creative with yarns, old clothes, paper and other art materials, and then craft homemade wigs and hats?

5.) Hair dye, especially those that are of bright or unusual colors, have high amounts of bleach that can make the hair dry and brittle. Even the ones that promises to be easily washed off contain some bleach. Instead of turning to chemicals for your kid's costume, you can have fun and make use of natural dyes with leftover vegetables and fruits, according to Pop Sugar.
