New Mexico police have had an 11-year-old charged from alleged accusations of multiple crimes such as shootings and burglaries.
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a juvenile is arrested on allegations of a violent month-long crime spree involving car burglaries and shootings. Despite the arrests made for the crimes, the locals in the area continue to raise concerns regarding the safety of their community against crimes committed by the youth.
An 11-Year-Old Charged by the New Mexico Police
Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina expressed his disappointment on social media, stating that it's disheartening to see an 11-year-old be arrested for multiple crimes they've committed, ranging from burglary to shooting an arm. He added that this armed individual's behavior was escalating, and he posed a significant danger to the community.
The arrest took place late Thursday, according to a police statement on Friday. Chief Medina expressed relief that the young suspect was apprehended without the use of force.
Medina added that, despite his young age, the suspect is considered very dangerous due to his use of a firearm and his escalating violence.
The juvenile was reported to be receiving an extensive list of severe charges. They include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, shooting into an occupied dwelling, aggravated battery, unlawful possession of a weapon by a minor, nonresidential burglary, criminal damage to property over $1,000, and conspiracy to commit a fourth-degree felony.
For now, it is still unclear if the boy has selected legal representation.
New Mexico Police Reveals Detailed Timeline of Events
The police have released a timeline outlining the crimes committed by the 11-year-old suspect.
On May 5, an auto was stolen in the northeast part of the megacity and recovered an hour later. On May 12, a woman reported that four children were throwing stones at her hearthstone, trying to break windows, and one of the stones struck her leg.
On the same day, the police received a report from a 12-year-old girl calling that a group of boys were throwing rocks at her home. The frequenter linked some of the boys as members of a group known as the "Kia Boys," notorious for their conditioning in the area.
In another incident, Albuquerque police responded to a marketable burglary where an auto was seen driving in rear and crashing into the frontal security door of a business. This incident resulted in over $15,000 in theft and damages, with the car tagged as stolen.
On May 29, a man communicated 911, claiming he'd been shot at by four boys in a blue Kia after he brazened them outside his home. The boys allegedly left but returned shortly after and shot at the man with a 9-mm, as evidence found at the scene implies.
Ongoing Investigation and Arrest
The crime spree continued on June 1, when police were advised to a firing where a man was shot in the hand. A 9-mm handgun was recovered at the scene. Through substantiation statements, victim accounts, and surveillance videotape, investigators were able to identify the juvenile suspect and secure an arrest warrant.
Chief Medina emphasized the graveness of the situation, noting that the boy's violent behavior posed serious trouble for public safety. The community remains in shock as authorities work to address the underpinning issues contributing to similar early felonious behavior.
As the investigation continues, the focus will be on understanding the factors leading to this disturbing chain of events and preventing similar incidents in the future.
