Father Recounts Son's Tragic Suicide Due to Bullying
The following day, May 5, was a common Sunday morning for the Teusch family. Sam cooked breakfast while the kids played video games.
When his youngest son, 10-year-old Sammy, asked for pancakes, Sam and one of his 13-year-old twin sons went to a nearby store to pick up an ingredient they needed.
Upon returning home and calling Sammy down for breakfast, their lives changed dramatically. Sammy, a fourth-grade student nearing the end of the school year, had taken his own life at home, as recounted by Sam Teusch.
Teusch expressed regret over not insisting Sammy accompany him to the store, reflecting, "There was no sign that morning that Sammy was troubled or that something terrible was about to happen. It just happened suddenly."
He described the aftermath as a "nightmare," struggling to find words for days and unable to comfort his children or himself.
Despite his anguish, Teusch has chosen to speak openly about Sammy's life and death, hoping to avoid similar disasters. He emphasizes statistics showing the predominance of bullying among school-aged children and highlights the effect of bullying on mental health.
Describing Sammy as a spirited child who loved trying new foods and outdoor activities like fishing and stargazing, Teusch emphasizes Sammy's strong-willed nature and the family's deep love for him.
Teusch noted changes in Sammy's demeanor after their move to Indiana in 2022, attributing it to bullying at his new school. He emphasized that bullying can affect any child, regardless of appearance or background.
In response to Sammy's death, Teusch has advocated for anti-bullying measures, including supporting an online petition for legislation and collaborating with organizations focused on bullying prevention.
