In 2020, a TikTok video gained fame by claiming that taking Mucinex D (guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine), cough medicine and decongestant, can help in fertilization.

An older study suggests that guaifenesin might improve pregnancy and support early gestation by thinning cervical mucus. However, no current research has explored whether Mucinex enhances pregnancy.

Although Mucinex is commonly considered not dangerous, it's essential to consult a healthcare provider before using it while attempting to conceive or during gestation.

How Mucinex Works and Its Potential Role in Pregnancy

Mucinex is a cough syrup that helps make the cough more productive. It can be bought in several forms, including extended- or immediate-release capsules or liquid syrups.

Mucinex commonly treats chest congestion caused by acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) like bronchitis, colds, and the flu, which often lead to thick mucus. Mucinex thins this mucus, making it easier to remove.

Mucinex can be taken separately or mixed with decongestants (Mucinex D) or cough suppressants (Mucinex DM, which includes guaifenesin and dextromethorphan).

The cervix generates mucus akin to that in the air passages. Thick cervical mucus can prevent sperm from reaching and fertilizing an egg during ovulation, and it may also prevent a fertilized egg from transporting to the uterus and implanting.

The theory is that Mucinex may thin cervical mucus, possibly helping fertilization.

In a TikTok video, user @julia_schuller claimed Mucinex D aided her conceive after using it for COVID-19 manifestations. However, there's an insufficient study on Mucinex's results on fertility.

A 1982 research found that guaifenesin might enhance fertility by thinning cervical mucus. Of 40 participants, 57.5% showed better postcoital test results, and 15 became pregnant. Since then, no research has verified these findings.

Dr. Lynn Westphal, an OB-GYN specializing in infertility, noted that while guaifenesin has been taken up for years as a possible fertility aid, the proof is mostly unscientific, and there's no definite evidence.

Mucinex is commonly not dangerous, but side effects may include headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Discuss with a healthcare provider if encounter an allergic reaction, which may trigger breathing challenges.

A 2021 review recommends that guaifenesin is possibly safe during gestations. As a category C medication, it can be used if the advantages outweigh the dangers.

However, some cough medicines contain alcohol, which is risky during gestation. It's recommended to discuss with a healthcare provider before taking Mucinex if attempting to conceive or are carrying a baby.

How Can You Increase Your Fertility?

While Mucinex might not be a ensured method for enhancing fertility, other methods can aid:

  • Eat Healthily: A balanced diet rich in fruits, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, vegetables, and whole grains (e.g., Mediterranean diet) helps fertility. Key nutrients include folic acid, iron, and vitamin C.
  • Prevent Smoking and Alcohol: Both can hinder fertilization and raise miscarriage danger.
  • Limit Caffeine: The CDC suggests reducing caffeine consumption to less than 200 milligrams daily while attempting to conceive and during gestation.
  • Manage Stress: Lessening stress is important when attempting to conceive. Techniques include a balanced diet, frequent exercise, enough sleep, engaging in enjoyable activities, and practicing relaxation methods like deep breathing, tai chi, or yoga.
