The battle is on for laptop companies as new convertibles hit the market. On one side of the ring, Microsoft has unveiled its first-ever laptop, the Surface Book, stating that it's more powerful than the latest MacBook Pro.
On the other side, Lenovo has also released a new convertible, the Yoga 900, with specs that make it pass for a contender. Let's see how the two fare up against each other.
According to PCWorld, the new Lenovo Yoga 900 has an elegant watchband hinge, in response to the Surface Book's dual-fulcrum hinge. The watchband hinge, carried over from an earlier model, has more than 800 individual pieces in its construction, and it does look like a wristwatch's bracelet.
The Yoga 900 packs a punch thanks to its innards. It has the latest-gen Skylake chips, either a Core i5 or i7. It's backed up by 8GB or 16GB memory, and will come with 256GB or 512GB of internal Samsung SSD storage.
It's equipped with a 13.3-inch IPS display boasting 3200x1800 (QHD+) resolution, with 10-point touch. However, it only offers Intel HD graphics. It has a front-mounted 1-megapixel camera.
The Yoga 900 has an audio combo jack, two USB type A ports, one USB type C port with video-out, and a DC-in port that also has USB 2.0 functions. It also has a 4-in-1 card reader, Bluetooth 4.0, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.
It's quite slim at 14.986 mm, and weighs 2.8 lbs. Lenovo claims the battery will give up to 9 hours of local video playback.
It comes with Windows 10 Home, and will be priced starting at $1,200 up to $1,500.
The Surface Book, on the other hand, is a real powerhouse. According to the Microsoft Website, the first-ever laptop from Microsoft boasts of sixth-gen Intel Skylake chips, either Core i5 or i7; backed by 8 or 16GB of RAM; and will offer either 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB internal storage.
It comes with a 13.5-inch “PixelSense” display that has 3000x2000 resolution, with 10-point touch. The graphics are delivered by either Intel HD graphics 520, or an NVIDIA GeForce GPU with 1GB DDR5 memory.
The Surface Book has two USB 3.0 ports, a full-size SD card reader, Headset jack, SurfaceConnect, and a Mini Display port. It also has Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.
It is 13.0 – 22.8 mm slim, and weighs 3.34 lbs total. Microsoft claims it can give 12 hours of video playback at a full charge.
It comes with Windows 10 Pro, and will be priced starting at $1,500, up to $3,200 for the premium 1TB model with Core i7.
