Excitement intensifies as new photos of the "Suicide Squad" have been released in the latest issue of Empire Magazine. Comic Book Movie got a hold of a copy, which showed a bunch of stills from the highly anticipated film for 2016 including a peek at Jared Leto's new look as the Joker.
In the photos, fans can see the whole gang of infamous villains assembled including Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Deadshot (Will Smith), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Katana (Karen Fukuhara). In another photo, Empire reveals a chilling face-to-face encounter between Harley Quinn and Joker when Quinn was still a psychiatrist.
The spread also gave a new up-close look at the powerful sorceress, Enchantress. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn, who is making her big screen debut in "Suicide Squad," is seen showing off her agility as she swings and hangs inside her cage.
According to Variety, Leto was so dedicated in the Joker's role that he never broke character. There were also reports that Leto even "pranked" his co-stars. He made calls to Jim Parrack to "spray paint roses and fill a backpack with nails." Meanwhile, he sent Robbie a dead rat while a package of bullets was delivered to Smith.
In the Empire Magazine feature, Leto revealed what went through his head while playing as the Joker. "I was just thinking that the Joker would probably just say, '[expletive] you,' and hang up," said Leto as quoted by Comic Book Movie.
Leto also explained that there was a "period of detachment" during his time as the Clown Prince. "I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole."
Leto disclosed that he had some unique ways to pump up for the role, including listening to 1920s gospel music and reading shaman literature. "I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. It's something different. If you don't break rules, you're not going to strike new ground. I think I'll be cooling down for the rest of my life," said Leto.
Director David Ayer also revealed how Leto's joker is different and scarier than previous versions, saying, "The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies. There's a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we've cooked up something transcendent. He's scary."
