Toyota Prius 2016: Best Hybrid? Fuel Efficient, Sporty Redesign, Smart Mode & More! [Review]

Recently, carmaker Toyota has unveiled the new 2016 model of the hybrid Prius. Dubbed by Clickgreen.org.uk as the "grandfather of hybrid cars," the upcoming Prius is coming out with the fourth-generation model that boasts of some improvements.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2016 model comes with a myriad of improvements and changes that drivers and hybrid car connoisseurs would like.

Overall Look

First, the car has been redesigned from front to end, bumper to bumper. Although the new Prius design is made to give the car a sportier feel, the lowered front seating, redesigned seats, and repositioned controls promise to give drivers and passengers a more conventional feel of the ride.

Fuel Economy

The new model has also become more fuel-efficient. According to Consumer, the car company has promised that the Prius will have 10 percent improved fuel economy, and this is brought about using reductions in both the weight of the car and the complexity of the powertrain.

Innovations to the heating system also add to the fuel-efficiency of the car. Active shutters open and close the grille as often as needed in response to outside temperatures. Additionally, buyers can choose between a nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion battery pack, both of which have received redesigns for efficiency as well.

Engine Power

Toyota claims that the Prius' 1.8-liter engine's 40 percent maximum thermal efficiency is the highest in a mass-produced gasoline engine. Although official specs haven't been released yet, it is expected that the 2016 Prius will deliver more power compared to its predecessors.

Sporty Feel

Fitted with a fully independent rear suspension, the 2016 Prius has improved handling and comfort. The car also has enhanced torsional rigidity, via the use of high-strength steel in the car's body work. It also improves safety levels in the event of a crash.

Bigger Cargo Space

Toyota has reduced the size of the hybrid battery, and has installed it underneath the rear seat. Thanks to this, there is now additional cargo and luggage space. Although official measurements for the U.S.-market model haven't been announced, Toyota has claimed that for Japanese markets, a 2-cubic-foot increase is added.

Smart Power Mode

Similar to the current model, the upcoming Prius will also have some driving modes. One, called the power mode, will use acceleration and G-sensors to heighten both throttle and braking responses when the car is driven enthusiastically.

Safety Features

The 2016 Prius features active collision avoidance and mitigation with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and a parking assistance system.
