Glamour's Women of the Year is up and one of our favorite trans dad is in the list. A day after Caitlyn Jenner celebrated her 66th birthday, Glamour announced its highly anticipated Women of the Year list on Thursday, Oct. 29.
According to the Associated Press, Jenner stands along other celebrity honorees such as Reese Witherspoon, Misty Copeland and Victoria Beckham.
The news outlet further notes that Jenner's inclusion on the list resulted to a backlash on social media. Many believed that she should be the Woman of the Year and not just one of the many women.
Glamour magazine's editor-in-chief Cindi Leive was quick to address the issue, explaining that the "I Am Cait" star's inclusion "certainly gives you an appreciation for the hostility to the trans community that still exists out there" but the list is about honoring women diversity.
Before the announcement, a representative of the former Olympian released a statement regarding the backlash, saying, "Where there is hateful chatter on Twitter, there is just as much, if not more, love and support. We prefer to focus on the positive."
Here are five things you need to know about Caitlyn Jenner:
1. She thought about committing suicide.
According to a report from ABC News, Jenner revealed that after having surgery for her transition last year, the paparazzi have been hounding her. At that moment, she thought of "ending it all” by using a gun she keeps in her Malibu home.
2. She is an advocate for transgender issues.
Jenner's feature on Glamour revealed that after her coming-out interview with Diane Sawyer, Jenner hosted a dinner for transgender women. There, she realized that she did not know much about the transgender community. "I don't know anything about the horrors of this community. I literally know nothing," said Jenner. Now, through "I Am Cait," the reality star hopes to educate the public and address important issues such as suicide among transgender women.
3. Her mom still calls her Bruce.
Jenner's mom, Esther, though supportive of her son's life still calls her by her former name, Bruce. "It's going to be a struggle for me to get used to the change, but happily so…I'm very happy for him—or her!" Jenner's mom told Access Hollywood.
4. Her mom initially thought that it was all about the money.
According to E! Online, citing Vanity Fair, Jenner's mom admitted that at first, she wondered why there is a need for so much surgery. "Is this all about making money?" she asked. However, she realized that it was more than that.
5. Her children from her past two marriages have known about her identity for years.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Burt, Cassandra, Brandon and Brody revealed that they have known their dad's real identity all along. They said that they are happy for whoever she chooses to be.
The ceremony for Glamour's 25th Anniversary Women of the Year Awards will be held on Nov. 9 at the Carnegie Hall.
