In 2013, Naughty Dog released “The Last Of Us,” a survival horror video game that became a hit with many fans. In fact, it became such a hit that players are clamoring over a sequel.
Back in June, Gamespot reported that the game's sequel was "accidentally" confirmed by voice actor Nolan North.
North, who is known for being the voice of Nathan Drake in the “Uncharted” game franchise, was asked during the Q&A at MetroCon if he will be working with game company Naughty Dog after “Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.”
"For now, [Uncharted 4] is the last one," North replied. “I know they're doing The Last of Us 2, but my character in The Last of Us... untimely demise."
North was referring to David, his character in the first TLOU, the leader of a group of survivors. However, he didn't survive.
Troy Baker, who voices TLOU protagonist Joel, said that he “knows nothing” about the sequel.
"I don't know if we're going to do another one or not," he said in the Indy PopCon. "If we do, I trust Neil [Druckmann, creative director] and Bruce [Straley, game director], and everyone at Naughty Dog to tell a story that needs to be told."
Gamespot earlier reported in 2014 that during the release of the first TLOU, Druckmann and Straley held a Reddit Q&A where fans can ask anything. There they said a sequel is possible.
“Right now I'd say it's 50/50,” Druckmann said at that time.
Now, Ecumenical News reported that after North's accidental reveal, Druckmann clarified what's happening. He said that a small team at Naughty Dog has been working on the sequel. However, production was stopped because the company experienced delays with the release of “Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.”
CrossMap reported that in September, Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr slipped. “All the facial animation in the Uncharted series was led up by Eric, here, and [on] the first The Last of Us. Uh, did I say the first The Last of Us?” he said. This sparked more rumors.
Plot rumors speculated that TLOU protagonist Joel won't be making much of an appearance in the sequel. Speculations claimed that Joel might get infected and Ellie might be forced to shoot him.
Other speculations said that instead of Joel and Ellie, maybe Marlene will be the sequel's main protagonist or that there will be a new antagonist.
Other rumors speculated that the sequel will release in 2016. But with Naughty Dog occupied with “Uncharted 4,” players can expect the sequel to come earliest in 2017, or even 2018-2019 as more viable release periods.
