With a new movie and some more games set to launch sometime soon, fans are getting hyped up over the “Star Wars” phenomenon. Add to that, “Star Wars: Battlefront” will get new sequels, according to an EA exec.
"It's a big effort for us, and I don't think there's a human being in the world who hasn't heard of the Star Wars movie coming. And so, [it's a] great opportunity," EA CFO Blake Jorgensen told Gamespot at the UBS Technology Conference.
"We struck a licensing deal with Disney a few years back that's almost ten years in length. The game that comes out tomorrow, Star Wars Battlefront, is a traditional first-person style shooter game,” Jorgensen explained. “Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC.”
This good news comes from the fact that Disney, who currently owns “Star Wars,” has given the go signal to the game company. Not only does EA have permission to cover the six “Star Wars” films that were already released, but also the upcoming “The Force Awakens” as well as future installments and other spinoffs included in the franchise.
“It's a huge opportunity for us," Jorgensen said.
Not only that, they have freedom to get any detail that they will need as long as the games they make stays adhered to the original established fiction.
"We get access to all of the historical content as well as all the new content developed," Jorgensen explained. "The beauty of the Star Wars franchise is it's almost unlimited in what you can do with it. We know Disney has done a great job with other franchises and we believe they'll do the same with Star Wars over time in delivering new worlds, new characters, new vehicles, all the things that make great video games. Our goal is not to make video games directly about the movies, it's to use the IP in the movie to make great, exciting games."
This news sounds promising and might mean having new “Star Wars” games in different platforms (including mobile) and genres possibly for up to the next eight years, according to PC Gamer.
Aside from “Battlefront,” former Naughty Dog writer and “Uncharted” director Amy Hennig is working with Visceral Games on a new "Star Wars" game. Rumor has it that it will be some kind of RPG.
“Star Wars: Battlefront” releases sometime this week.
