The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year. It bested other finalists from a very impressive list that includes the BMW 7-Series, Audi TT, Mercedes-AMG GTS and the Honda Civic.
"Our 2016 Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Camaro, is one of the finest driving vehicles in the world at any price," said Motor Trend editor-in-chief Edward Loh of their choice. "Its price is well within reach of the average consumer."
On its official site, Motor Trend staff members and judges detailed why the Chevrolet Camaro became their top pick. Among its plus points, the car was cited for its "335-horsepower, 284-lb-ft of torque, 3.6-liter V-6 and GM's new eight-speed automatic transmission," which Loh said had "really great calibration."
The car enthusiasts were also impressed by the Camaro's advanced design. "The biggest area of visual change is likely the C-pillar and quarter window area for most people. Wheel to body, gesture, and overall graphics add to a very nimble appearance, especially the rear three-quarter view," remarked one of the judges.
Cheat Sheet reported that the Chevrolet Camaro had classic undertones despite its modern design and it is quite eye catching from all angles. It also described the car as sexy, powerful and practical.
The car also doesn't sacrifice safety and efficiency on top of its gorgeous form and this is where it matters most. The car was carefully built for its intended function as it offers a comfortable ride and can best be used for road trips, per Cars. A welcome bonus is its price, which ranges from $27,000 to $37,000 depending on the horsepower.
Per Cars Direct, on-sale dates of the car will vary depending on the model, but the coupe versions are already out since October.
"A revelation. Absolutely world-class sports car performance and dynamics from an American icon," another judge wrote in the Motor Trend site. Per Autoblog, there were nine judges who evaluated all of the finalists.
"The Camaro, I couldn't be more proud of this team that delivered the Camaro," General Motors boss Mark Reuss said when he received the award, per Detroit News. He called on GM North America President Alan Batey, GM head of design Ed Welburn and Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser to accept the award on stage with him. General Motors also won the Truck of the Year Award for its Chevrolet Colorado, which earned the same feat last year.
Per CTV News, Motor Trend has been doing the awards for over 60 years.
