"The Big Bang Theory" Season 9 is headed for another milestone as its most unusual couple, Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bailik), are finally going to have sex five years into their relationship.
Sex is somewhat of a big deal for the show as the nerdy TV couple have yet to do the deed in nearly 200 episodes. "After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship, and we're so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes," said producer Steve Molaro in a statement via CNN. The special episode was filmed Tuesday, Nov. 17 and it will be aired on CBS Thursday, Dec. 17 at 8:00 p.m.
When Season 9 started, Sheldon and Amy were broken up and the latter started dating another guy. Sheldon's friends found out he had actually planned on proposing to Amy before their split, but now, the situation between them have remained strained and uncomfortable. Per USA Today, the tides will begin to turn in the show's Thanksgiving episode airing Nov. 19.
Despite the anticipated moment, fans of the series may have to hold off their excitement for the couple because even if Sheldon and Amy are finally going to consummate their relationship, this doesn't mean they are back together, per Daily Mail.
"People want to jump to all sorts of conclusions," said Bailik when asked about her character's relationship with Sheldon in a previous Los Angeles Times interview. "It's super-exciting to do so and they love these characters and they know them. But the neat thing about our show ... and Jim and my character's relationship is that anything can happen."
Meanwhile, USA Today also reported that the Dec. 17 episode will feature the return of Bob Newhart whose character haunts Sheldon's consciousness like Obi-Wan Kenobi from "Star Wars." Incidentally, the episode will air on the night "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters. It should be noted that the "Big Bang" boys are huge "Star Wars" fans.
"The Big Bang Theory" is the number one comedy series in America and, despite its longevity, its popularity continues to rise. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the show already received a tent season renewal, but producers are still not aware if this will be the final season.
Aside from Bailik and Parsons, the series also stars Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Halberg, Melissa Rauch and Kunal Nayyar.
