'Sherlock' Season 4 Air Date, Premiere & Trailer: Photos & Plot Details of Christmas Special 'The Abominable Bride' Released

Good news for "Sherlock" fans, the long wait is over as "Sherlock" has just released the plot details and posters for its Victorian Christmas special. It's been two years since Sherlockians saw Benedict Cumberbatch's famous detective character, and the one-off standalone episode of "Sherlock" in BBC is a sweet treat for Sherlockians worldwide.

A report from Games Radar gives an early sneak peek on what to expect in "Sherlock's" Christmas special titled "The Abominable Bride." The newly released character posters show a Victorian version of Sherlock Holmes. Cumberbatch looked suave with a collared suit, sleek hair and a pocket watch. Meanwhile, his pal Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) donned a sophisticated Victorian look with a coat and tie, hat and a bushy mustache. See Sherlock and Dr. Watson's posters here and here.

In an interview with Independent, Freeman previously revealed that at first, he had doubts about the Victorian concept for "Sherlock's" Christmas special because of the mustache. “I'm going to try to rein in that in series four and not let Steven and Mark think this is an ongoing thing now, or I'll end up as Robinson Crusoe," he joked.

Of course, there is also a character poster for the bride, but it is still shrouded in mystery. On the poster, the bride is seen wearing a laced wedding gown while her face is covered with a veil, only revealing her bloody lips. See the poster here.

To know more about the "Sherlock" special, Comic Book Resources recently revealed the synopsis for "The Abominable Bride," which read:

"We’ve been here before -- but what if this wasn’t the modern day but the late Victorian period? What if the world’s most famous consulting detective and his best friend lived in a Baker Street of steam trains, hansom cabs, top hats and frock-coats?

Welcome to ‘Sherlock’ in 1895!

Some things, though, remain reassuringly the same. Friendship, adventure and especially, MURDER…

Why is Thomas Ricoletti a little surprised to see his wife dressed in her old wedding gown? Because, just a few hours before, she took her own life…

Mrs. Ricoletti’s ghost now appears to be prowling the streets with an unslakeable thirst for revenge. From fog-shrouded Limehouse to the bowels of a ruined church, Holmes, Watson and their friends must use all their cunning to combat an enemy seemingly from beyond the grave and the final, shocking truth about… the Abominable Bride!"

Catch "Sherlock's" Victorian special, "The Abominable Bride," on New Year, Jan. 1, 2016, via PBS and BBC One. It will also be screened in select theaters.
