After being rumored for a while now, a third movie about "Gremlins" is finally happening. The confirmation was made by the movie's very own star Zach Galligan via E! Online.
"It's not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form," said the 51-year-old actor who was in both versions of the cult horror-comedy movie, which first screened in 1984. Galligan also confirmed the participation of writer and director Chris Columbus in "Gremlins 3." He was the original writer of the first "Gremlins."
When "Gremlins 2" followed in 1990, Columbus was no longer attached to the project. Instead, he went on to become a sought after film director and swore that a reboot will not be possible for as long as he is alive. With talks for "Gremlins 3" happening, it was clear the director didn't want to tamper and tarnish the original story. However, Columbus confirmed back in April that he was involved in the reboot, per Slashfilm. "We were approached with an idea that really sounded like an interesting version. It's not a remake of the movie at all. It's just a reinvention of it."
Going by what Columbus said, Galligan gave hints as to what fans of the cult movie can expect when it returns. "The only thing they will be, and apparently are going to be doing, is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later," Galligan further told E! Online. He also hinted that some of the characters from the first "Gremlin" will be part of the third movie.
The first "Gremlins" was a story about Gizmo, a mogwai that was bought from an Asian store. Gizmo spawned other gremlins that had a penchant for terrorism and destruction. Galligan played Billy Peltzer in the two films and he owned and controlled Gizmo. The second movie featured the gremlins taking over a New York skyscraper and even had Hulk Hogan for a cameo.
Per Daily Mail, Galligan was only 19-years-old when he starred in the movie that became a worldwide hit. When talks of the reboot started, he had no idea if he was going to be part of it. "I swear on my life I don't know if I'm in it or not," he said. "But I think there's probably a decent chance since I'm one of the few people kind of left standing from the first one."
