A latest study says that over 800 children below 16 years of age go to doctors every day complaining about serious breathing problems due to passive smoking.
The study states that more than 80 percent of passive smoke is invisible, odorless and has dangerous toxins and poisons that cause cancer.
The research conducted by the Royal College of Physicians surveyed almost 700 parents. Of these, around 68 percent said they smoked in the car when their children were with them. The researchers said that of the 300,000 children visiting doctors every year, around 120,000 suffer from middle ear diseases and 22,000 cases of wheezing and asthma are reported. Almost 20,000 children have respiratory infections, the researchers said.
"It's well known that smoking kills, but many smokers still don't realize the damage their smoke causes to those around them," Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies said.
Passive smoking increases the risk of children getting lung cancer, meningitis and even leads to cot death.
"Our message is clear: giving up smoking is by far the best way to protect your family and we can help you quit to give you and your loved ones a healthier future," Davies added.
"The evidence is clear. Smoking around children is harmful, especially in homes and cars, so it's vital they are protected from the dangers of second-hand smoke," Dr Harpal Kumar, CEO of Cancer Research UK said to Daily Mail.
