Conor McGregor's win against the legendary Jose Aldo of Brazil, cemented the Irishman's legacy in the UFC. With his stake expected to rise even higher, the 27-year-old fighter did not forget to thank his fans and family for the support.
In an Instagram post on his account under the username "thenotoriousmma," he posted a photo of himself raising both hands in victory and thanked all his supporters.
He stated that he is "grateful and proud to be in the position" he is in today. "To the naked eye it was 13 seconds, but to my team and my family it has been a lifetime of work to get to that 13 seconds," he wrote.
McGregor also congratulated the people behind the UFC on a great year and for this week's even that will surely leave a mark in history as it broke sales records previously held by the fighting organization. "It is an honor to be playing a part in this great companies continued growth and success and an honor to top off a phenomenal week in the sports history" he stated.
The Irish athlete also appreciated the support of his country and for the people who travelled to Las Vegas just to see him fight for the title. "I am forever blown away by the support of my country. We have changed the game forever!!!"
He also paid respect to his opponent, Aldo, in the statement saying that "true greats will always overcome adversity." "I wish him and his loyal team well on their journey back. Much respect. Thank you all!!!"
Meanwhile, several fans were a bit disappointed that the fight ended very early. More fans wanted to see more actions from the fight that was hyped up by the media. McGregor just needed 13 seconds to dispatch Aldo and claimed the belt as the new featherweight champion.
What's next for the Irish champion? According to the report by Yahoo, McGregor wants to win another belt in higher weight class that will make him two-division champion. However, he explained that he does not have any plan of giving up the featherweight belt should he decide to fight for another weight class.
"There'll be a belt on one shoulder and a belt on the other shoulder. I understand why previously they would have fighters do that, because many fighters don't fight as frequently as I do. I'm busy. I stay active," McGregor said. "When I go up to lightweight and I take that lightweight belt, I will still be the featherweight champion."
