Having recently given birth to her second child with Kanye West, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star Kim Kardashian-West seems to enjoy every little bit – including her own placenta.
US Weekly reported that the proud mom just recently revealed in a blog post, titled "Eating My Placenta," that she eats her placenta after her childbirth. She even posted a photo of her “supplements” on her website.
"So, I'm really not this holistic person or someone who would have ever considered eating my placenta," Kardashian-West wrote in the blog post.
"And when I say 'eat my placenta,' I mean that I'm having it freeze-dried and made into a pill form—not actually fry it like a steak and eat it (which some people do, BTW)," the 35-year-old mom of two explained.
Kardashian-West is reportedly consuming her own placenta in the form of dark purple pills. She reportedly tried the method after giving birth to her second child North.
She said she heard stories of mothers who never ate their placenta from their first pregnancy and suffered from postpartum depression. These mothers, then, took placenta pills after their second pregnancy and did not suffer from the condition. This made her think of trying it out.
The reality star said she doesn't want to experience the “baby blues” and that the placenta that she will be consuming is her own. Considering that she's got nothing to lose and that other moms say they benefit from it, she decided to give it a go.
Now that she's taking it, Kardashian-West said they are effective.
"I had great results and felt so energized and didn't have any signs of depression!" she wrote on her site. "I definitely had to do it again. Every time I take a pill, I feel a surge of energy and feel really healthy and good. I totally recommend it for anyone considering it!”
WebMD said that the act of eating your own placenta is called “placentophagy.” It is done by animals and by some humans, including both tribal and celebrity women.
Some said that eating or consuming the placenta rakes in many benefits such the “surge of energy” that Kardashian-West mentioned and quantity of breast milk produced. Some also claimed that it helps balance hormones, thus preventing postpartum depression. However, these claims haven't been fully tested.
According to a government-funded study, however, eating or consuming the placenta brings no health benefit to humans.
