"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is well on its way in becoming the highest grossing film of all time. After just 12 days, the JJ Abrams-helmed blockbuster has already gone on to gross over a billion dollars in the box office.
Although the first Star Wars film was originally released in 1977, the sci-fi film series' loyal fan base still has not died down. In fact, the size of this fan base has significantly increased due to the release of The Force Awakens. The number is still expected to grow with the release of two other movies in the new trilogy.
The seventh installment of the iconic franchise has only been screening for 12 days when it officially reached the $1 billion milestones. It reached this milestone faster than any other movie in history, beating out the likes of Avengers and Avatar. The new Star Wars movie also broke records of the largest Christmas day and second-week earnings in history.
"[Star Wars: The Force Awakens] brought in more than $350 million at the North American box office but fell short of the global record due to its late China release date," reported ONE News. The previous record holder "Jurassic World" was beaten by just one day, with the dinosaur-themed flick grossing a billion dollars in the span of 13 days, although Jurassic World did have the advantage of being released on time in China.
In an article posted on CNN Money, it is stated that "The Force Awakens" made $1 billion in half the time it took another Disney hit franchise, Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," to do so this summer."
The new Star Wars movie is not only a hit with moviegoers. It has also been critically acclaimed, holding a 94 percent rating on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. There is a lot of Oscar talk surrounding The Force Awakens and it wouldn't be surprising if it won multiple awards.
