For the longest time, the character limit on Twitter has been 140, but a considerable amount of Twitter users still find themselves resorting to misspellings and wrong grammar in order to get their point across in a single tweet. Now, there are reportedly plans to increase the tweet character limit to 10,000 to attract users.
Services such as TwitLonger and Twinormous would definitely be pushed into obscurity if the people behind Twitter push through with this massive change. Users will no longer need to split their ideas into multiple tweets just so they can broadcast them on Twitter.
Users can also include all the links, photos, poll questions, and hashtags they want if this idea pushes through. These advancements can definitely attract a large amount of new users who were first apprehensive of the microblogging service if the reports from sites such as ABC News are to be believed.
"We didn't start Twitter with a 140-character restriction. We added that early on to fit into a single SMS message (160 characters)," Jack Dorsey said in a photo he tweeted from his personal account. A lot of news outlets such as ABC believe that this is Dorsey confirming that Twitter will indeed increase its character limit.
"It's become a beautiful constraint, and I love it! It inspires creativity and brevity. And a sense of speed. We will never lose that feeling," Dorsey added. Increasing the limit by over 70 times is a big step, but not all people are for it. Fortune's Dan Primack recently tweeted an image of what 10,000 characters and its gaudy length would look like.
Journalist and record producer Joshua Topolsky also jumped on the topic. He jokingly thanked Twitter for reportedly increasing its character limit because people are "running out of places to blog." While there have been critics of the proposed move, it also has its supporters. While not yet confirmed, there are also no official reports denying this character limit increase from happening in the near future.
