A Filipino Chef Just Made The Fanciest Donut In Brooklyn: A $100 Donut Is Champagne Flavored With 24-Karat Gold Leaf

Björn DelaCruz, Manila Social Club's head chef, created a luxurious $100 donut with purple yam base, filled with Champagne jelly and ube mousse, glazed with Cristal Champagne icing and covered in 24-karat gold. The said lavish donut is reportedly made to order.

According to Daily Mail, the Filipino chef is an avid fan of champagnes and thought of including it in his artisanal gold covered donut. He said that the donut was intended for a one-time holiday special in the restaurant. However, because of its unexpected prompt popularity, the said donut remained permanent in the restaurant's menu.

"The reason that gold leaf and Cristal were added was because I love all different champagnes," Björn said. "I wanted to add something [to the menu] for the New Year to celebrate how long and how well we have been going. I didn't know people would go and order a dozen [of these] at a time! But then again, it is New York, and there are people willing to put down [over a] grand for a dozen donuts," he continued.

DelaCruz also said that the champagne Cristal goes and blends well with the purple yam because of its 'honey notes'. He never thought to himself that it would be the perfect and great combo for a pastry -- such a great signature sweet!

"For me, it's shiny and it's golden, but it comes together to create a really great donut, as crazy as that sounds. There was a time when I was eating this donut while drinking Cristal, and I was like, Oh, this is a great combo," the Filipino chef shared.

It is reported that some extravagant New Yorkers are willing to order them by dozen. The chef is reportedly proud of his "extraordinarily special donut" that he personally delivers it to the customers.

"I take pride in this, and to me, it's a piece of art," he confidently said.
