‘Wet Nurses’ in Demand in China

Wet Nurses or specialized adult nannies are in demand in China for providing sick but wealthy newborn babies with nutritious breast milk.

According to sources, rich Chinese adults have recently seen the importance of breast milk consumption among newborn babies, thus demanding for the service of adult nannies to provide such.

In Shenzhen, one of China's cities is home to a home help agency that provides families in need with what they call wet nurses. Manager of Xinxinyun Household Service Company, Lin Jun, confirmed that most of their clients are successful and rich company directors as well as rich couples from nearby country Hong Kong.

Lin Jun also said that breast milk consumption is not only limited for the consumption of newborn babies because even adults can drink the same milk that is known to have the highest nutritional value as compared to other types of milk and dairy.

However, Lin Jun said that adult clients have an option if they want to drink milk directly through breastfeeding or through the use of a breast pump.

Reports have said that around 16,000 Yuan is being paid to 'wet nurses' for their six to eight months of breastfeeding services. Of course, healthier and better looking wet nurses are paid more, Lin Jun confirmed.

A lot of critics stated their disgust about the issue saying that this kind of service or 'trade' is unethical and should be stopped. Cao Baoyin, a Chinese writer said that this kind of activity will only "lead to China's problem of treating women as consumer goods".

Since 2008, there has been a spike in the demand for wet nurses.
