Gamers get a bad rap from time to time, especially those who are avid fans of violent video games, but they are also known as some of the most charitable people in the world. The recently concluded Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) successfully $1.2 million for charity.
AGDQ ran for more than a week, from Jan. 3 to Jan. 10, 2016. During this time, gamers from all around the world came together to complete video games as quickly as possible, something known as "speedrunning." During the event, they played and streamed classic video games (like Legend of Zelda and Master Quest) and modern games (such as Splatoon and Bloodborne).
Awesome Games Done Quick recently released a complete list of games that were played during the charitable event. The list also included the name of the player who streamed the game and even their start and end times. People could also see if bid wars occurred during a certain stream.
A lot of people watched these streams and a good amount of them also donated money for a good cause. All streamers had donation incentives they set and had to reach before they completed the game. According to an Engadget report, the average amount donated is $40. However, there was a person who donated as much as $18,255. All of these donations amounted to over $1.2 million, which was donated for the benefit of the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
Last year, AGDQ 2014 raised over $1.6 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. These successive donations definitely helped the efforts of the charitable foundation. The 2016 of Awesome Games Done Quick will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is expected to take place during July 3rd to the 9th. It will be a summer edition of the event, but there is yet to be an official announcement of which charitable foundation will receive the money raised from this next event.
