A 10-year-old girl, who underwent heart surgeries, is asking her favorite toy company to create a doll that has a surgical chest scar, just like hers. Although, the company hasn't commented about the petition yet, her family is still hopeful that the little girl's request will eventually be heard -- after the firm released a diabetes care kit for dolls.
In the Change.org site, Lamaya Sakales explained that she was born with congenital heart defect. She said she has a scar running through her chest, following her three open heart surgeries. Now, the little girl is asking the American Girl to create a doll with scars on the chest as she wants to "feel safe and normal like it doesn't have to be a secret."
Sakales further said that she wants to see this type of doll not only for her own sake, but for the others welfare, too. "Please make a doll with a chest scar (or a scar kit) for the many kids who live with scars that show their bravery," she wrote.
Christen Sakales, Lamaya's mother explained to ABC News how the idea crossed to her daughter's mind. She said her child was inspired to create the petition after American Girl released a diabetes care kit that was also supported by Change.org.
"She loves American Girl dolls and she's always said that she'd wish she could have a doll with a chest surgery scar," Mrs Sakales explained to the news publication. "I saw online that there was another girl who'd done it for diabetic kits and she said, 'Hey, let's see if they'd do it for us, too'."
As of now, Sakales' petition already garnered about 4,300 supporters. But American Girl hasn't released any comments yet about the little girl's request. Nevertheless, Lamaya's family is still optimistic that they will be seeing dolls soon created with surgical chest scars.
