'Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ Release Date, Cast, Plot & News Update: David Bowie’s Almost-Cameo, Character That WON’T Be Returning, New Cast Joining, Release Date

Director James Gunn would have had David Bowie in a cameo role in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'. Gunn reveals that he began working on getting Bowie into the sequel after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recommended bringing in the icon.

The Telegraph reports that in the beginning, Gunn thought Bowie might be too unwell to get involved. Happily, he received a positive response from the 'Life on Mars' singer's camp. "We heard back that he was okay and it could potentially happen. Who knows what that was about? But, for whatever reason, it made [the news] more of a surprise."

Bowie who quietly passed away among loved ones after an 18-month bout with cancer played a pivotal role in Gunn's early years. "[Bowie's music] was the music that was playing the night I hit bottom on alcohol and drugs as a very young person."

As a tribute, Gunn is hoping to add one more of Bowie's materials next to 'Moonage Daydream' in the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' track collection. "I've been trying to work another song from [the album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust' and the 'Spiders From Mars'] into the sequel, which would make Bowie the only artist to have a song on both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2," he explains.

In other news, Superhero Hype reports that Benicio del Toro's The Collector is not likely going to be seen during the May 5, 2017 theater release. While a clear favorite among many that saw him in Volume 1, The Collector is apparently not as essential to the story line in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2'. Still the 'Sicario' actor has no reason to pout. His 2016 schedule will likely be filled up with filming for his to-be-revealed villain role in 'Star Wars: Episode 8', which is also looking at a May 2017 release.

In the meantime, Chris Pratt (as Peter Quill / Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (as Gamora), Vin Diesel (voicing for Groot), Bradley Cooper (voicing for Rocket Raccoon) and Dave Bautista (as Drax) will definitely be back. Cinema Blend reports as heard from MTV's Happy Sad Confused that joining the cast fresh from his successful stint at Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' is Kurt Russell. The veteran, who admits to having never seen 'Guardians of the Galaxy', will play Peter Quill's father.
