"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" broke multiple records upon its release and it is still growing strong. As a testament to just how good of a movie it is, the seventh episode of the sci-fi franchise recently received 5 Academy Award nominations.
Before the nominations for the 88th Annual Academy Awards were released earlier today, fans were already certain that the new "Star Wars" film would get multiple nominations. "The Force Awakens" was nominated in the Film Editing, Original Score, Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing categories.
"We're thrilled and congratulate all the nominees. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Bryan Burk, is a film that has introduced a galaxy far, far away to whole new generation, and we're proud of everyone who worked to bring it to life," said a statement on the official Star Wars website.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" received the second most Academy Award nominations among the seven films in the series released today. The one that received the most nominations was the original Star Wars movie released back in 1977. It was nominated ten times and won six awards.
Although is had been nominated for multiple categories, the latest "Star Wars" movie was noticeably snubbed from other ones, says Fox News. First of all, despite being the highest grossing film of all time, it was not nominated in the Best Picture category (which was also extended to include ten nominees). J.J. Abrams was also noticeably snubbed from the Best Director Category.
In the end, the five nominations received by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" were overshadowed by the haul of films such as "Spotlight," "Mad Max: Fury Road," and "The Martian." The most nominations was received by "The Revenant" with 12 nods.
