The balance intake of lipids, containing fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3, among pregnant women is essential for the improvement of the development of the brain of an unborn child. A recent research shows that having dietary lipid diet during pregnancy enables the soon-to-be mom and the baby in the womb acquire certain essential nutrients.
According to Science Daily, the researchers led by Professor Noriko Osumi at Tohoku University's Schools of Medicine have determined the link between increased fish intake during pregnancy and the development of the brain of the baby.
The researchers found out in their animal study, that when female mice were fed with less omega-6 and omega-3 diet, their broods were born with a smaller brain. Thus, later on in their adulthood, they displayed abnormal behavior, too.
The reason behind the brain abnormality of the broods of the mice was caused by a premature aging of the fetal neural stem cells that generate brain cells, Professor Osumi explained. The premature aging refers to an imbalance of oxides of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. The researchers also noticed the broods of the mice displayed higher anxiety levels although they were nurtured right diet during a lactation period.
WebMD states that omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential for good reasoning. These fatty acids build healthy cells that maintain the brain and the nerve function. Omega-6 comes from plant oils such as soybean oil, corn oil, nuts, sunflower oil and seeds. The omega-3 comes from fish such as tuna, herrings, sardines, mackerel, salmon, flaxseeds and walnuts. Hence, study shows that pregnant women must limit the intake of tuna.
The American Heart Association advises 5 percent to 10 percent of calories intake from foods with omega-6 fatty acids. They also recommend a diet with omega-3 fatty acids by eating fish at least twice a week.
The research focuses on the benefits of the dietary lipids -- the omega-6 and omega-3 diets, that are found helpful in improving brain formation. Watch the video to know certain "fish" that pregnant women should eat.
