"The Revenant" Leonardo DiCaprio is pondering becoming Russia's own President Putin. The Oscars 2016 nominee, who says "The Revenant" is the most difficult film he has ever done, is now looking into the challenge of portraying the Russian leader. Not only does the star want to make a movie on President Putin, but DiCaprio says he is also happy to play the October Revolution leader Vladimir Lenin. Grigori Rasputin, infamous friend of Tsar Nicholas II, is another object of interest.
According to RT, Germain daily Die Welt reported that the unforgettable Jack of blockbuster "Titanic" thinks that President Putin is quite an interesting figure. The celebrities met in 2010 when the Hollywood star took part in the International Forum on Tiger Conservation in St. Petersburg. "My fund has several projects aimed at financial support for protecting these wild cats [Siberian tigers]," DiCaprio remarks. "Putin and me spoke only about these magnificent animals, not about politics."
Indeed, President Putin enjoys a kind of rock star status, not just in Russia but worldwide. In 2015, President Putin won the TIME 100 reader's poll, beating out rapper-singer CL of the South Korean girl-group 2NE1 and US pop queens Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
The actor in DiCaprio is seemingly captivated by the Russian's colorful history and its equally colorful luminaries. "I think there should be more films about Russian history because it has many stories worthy of Shakespeare. That is fascinating for an actor," DiCaprio explains. "Lenin also would be an interesting role. I would like also to star as Rasputin."
The 41-year old, whose grandmother is in fact Russian, is often heard to refer to this lineage saying he is "half-Russian." This year, he is on his sixth nomination for an Oscar award within a period of 23 years. Leonardo DiCarprio has famously never won in any previous nominations and is a big crowd favorite to get the Best Actor title this year for his role as Phillip Glass in the multi-nominated "The Revenant" by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
One of his biggest supporters is "Titanic" co-star Kate Winslet. "You can sort of feel it and I think everyone wants it for him. It would be amazing," Winslet expressed.
The "Divergent" star, who wowed the crowd in her little black dress at the recently-concluded London Critics' Circle Film Awards, thinks that her "Steve Jobs" co-star Michael Fassbender is a very worthy competition for DiCaprio.
"But I think you can feel the temperature and it's probably going to be Leo's year," Winslet expressed. Despite not winning any of the British Awards for this year, February 28 should be a very interesting day for DiCaprio and his fans.
