The annual U.S. News & World report released its best hospital rankings. Evaluating more than 5,000 medical centers across the nation, the rankings consider 16 medical specialties including cancer, rehabilitation and surgery.
If a hospital is deemed one of the best in at least six different specialties, it earns a spot on the Honor Roll list.
Eighteen hospitals across the country made the Honor Role this year. The top 10 are:
1. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,
2. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston
3. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
4. Cleveland Clinic in Ohio
5. UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles
6. Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago
7. (tie) New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, N.Y.
7. (tie) UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco
9. Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston
10. UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia are first timers for the Honor Roll while the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in Ann Arbor lost their spots on the list.
There were some surprising changes to this years list. After being the number one spot on the country's best hospitals list for 21 years, John Hopkins Hospital was replaced by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 2012.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital made the biggest leap, jumping six spots from No. 12. Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis had the biggest fall, dropping nine spots.
The U.S. News & World Report also released its children hospital rankings, placing Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at No. 1.
