'The Mummy' Versus 'World War Z 2' Summer Showdown Release Date, Cast, Plot & Update: Tom Cruise Confirmed To Star In Marvel Universe For Monsters

Universal blockbuster "The Mummy" is getting a reboot with Tom Cruise and "Kingsman: The Secret Service" Sofia Boutella already confirmed to star. Summer's box office will see big game with Tom Cruise versus Brad Pitt as the June 9, 2017 release date pits "The Mummy" against the zombie apocalypse film "World War Z 2." In fact, final instalment "Divergent: Ascendant" is also joining the fray with a scheduled release for the same date.

According to Collider, early reports indicate that the rebooted mummy will be female and Boutella will play the title role while the "Mission Impossible" star will take on the role of a former Navy Seal who gets thrown into a world of monsters. "Prometheus" writer Jon Spaihts is in charge of screenplay.

Vanity reports that Alex Kurtzman and "Fast and Furious 6" producer Chris Morgan have been tasked by Universal to develop "The Mummy" toward the direction of eventually seeing a Marvel Universe-type of tie-ins Avengers. Characters such as characters as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, the Invisible Man, and Van Helsing may well link paths soon.

Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan, and Sean Daniel will co-produce. Kurtzman, who directed "People Like Us," will also take the helm for the reboot.

"The Mummy" reboot is timelined into current day and will be nothing like the Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weiss 1999 hit. Despite the distinction, Forbes reports a few concerns expressed over how well Cruise at 52 can fill the action role that Fraser portrayed with ease in his 30s. Still Cruise's Ethan Hunt remaining successfully believable in the box office hit "Mission Impossible 3: Rogue Nation" is more than reassuring.

Angelina Jolie was also supposedly being tapped to play "The Bride of Frankenstein." Cruise's involvement in "The Mummy" may have raised the bar for this genre to sufficiently entice Angelina to sign up for the film.
