Food Guidelines: Is It Really Necessary For Us To Be Told What To Eat And To Follow A New Food Pyramid?

The US Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services have joined forces to come up with a dietary plan to guide Americans to have a healthier diet on their food pyramid. This food guideline is where Federal food, nutrition education and information programs are based, and every five years, policymakers revise the guidelines to better cater to the health needs of every American.

The list is divided into three parts, chapter one is the key elements of healthy eating patterns which mainly talks about what and how people should eat to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The second chapter focuses on the necessary changes an individual should make to achieve the said lifestyle as well. It includes the different food groups, current intakes of an average person, and some necessary changes in the eating pattern. Finally, the last chapter talks about the role every person should have in achieving a healthy state. The chapter focuses more on creating and supporting healthy options.

Last week, the newly revised guideline was released and many have noticed that the list made a huge leap forward. This will be the basis for all dietary plans until the year 2020. The revised list focuses more on certain figures. Example of which is the sugar intake.

In the past, the list only stated that an individual should limit their intake while the revised guideline states to limit your daily calorie intake to 10 percent. Those people who love sugary stuff will have to likely give up a chunk of food they like to eat.

However, though so many people have been too preoccupied to think about anything else, there were still some other noticeable changes in the list. It surprisingly did not say anything about slowing down on the intake of eggs per day; however it did focus more on lowering down the sodium in the diet.

The food guidelines also made suggestions that teen boys and adult men should limit their daily intake of protein and eat more plant-based foods instead. While the old list suggested more limitations, the new list is focused more on encouragements.
