Biochemicals In Berries And Citrus Fruits: Main Keys In Preventing Impotence, Study Says

Recent study showed that biochemicals found in berries and citrus fruits are more likely to prevent erectile dysfunction. Combining exercise with your flavonoid diet can greatly help, too.

Flavonoids are biochemicals that give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors. The study found out that there are three specific flavonoids: anthocyanins, flavonones and flavones. Anthocyanins are found in strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, radishes and red wine.

On the other hand, flavonones and flavones are found in citrus fruits and are believed to have the best benefits in preventing erectile dysfunction, according to the Chicago Tribune.

It was revealed that men younger than 70 can best benefit from flavonoids. In fact, according to Tri-County Sun Times, a new collaborative study between the University of Anglia in the United Kingdom and Harvard University in the United States found out that the risk of having erectile dysfunction can be reduced by having a flavonoid-rich diet.

The research team asked 25,000 middle-aged and older men about their ability to have and maintain an erection during intercourse. They concluded that the risk of erectile dysfunction was reduced by 14 percent if they had a higher fruit intake and decreased by 21 percent if they combined exercise with flavonoid-rich foods.

Moreover, on Jan. 13, researchers published that flavonoid-rich foods are associated with reduced risk of erectile dysfunction, which affects middle-aged and older men in the American journal of Clinical Nutrition as posted on South China Morning Post. Men who regularly consume flavonoid-rich foods even in few portions a week were 10 percent less likely to suffer erectile dysfunction according to Aedin Cassidy, lead researcher and nutrition professor at the University of East Anglia.

Flavonoids can reduce blood pressure and preserve the health of blood vessels and it might boost the man's ability to achieve and maintain an erection. However, the director of the reproductive and sexual medicine, Dr. Bruce Gilbert was not satisfied that eating more berries will decrease erectile dysfunction.
