Overtaking Jared Leto's the Joker in generating press is anti-hero film "Suicide Squad's" Harley Quinn. "Wolf of Wallstreet" actress Margot Robbie plays the former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel. Judging by her sky-high popularity-meter, Robbie seems to have successfully made "Suicide Squad's" live-action version of DC Comics-character Harley Quinn more than smashing.
Screen Rant reported that Harley Quinn may actually be the character that makes "Suicide Squad" either fly or bite the dust. This is because "Suicide Squad" is the first film where Harley Quinn's character will be pushed forward to the mainstream movie audience. Quinn has her own massive following among DC comic book fans and has her own series and significant segments in the DC Universe.
With a role that is tantamount to pivotal to the success of "Suicide Squad," Movie Pilot provided a good close up of Harley Quinn's story. In the film, Quinn meets and finds the beginnings of a bond with Jared Leto's the Joker when she makes an entrance as an earnest and idealistic intern at the Arkham Asylum. Movie Pilot also describes one of the main encounters among the Joker, Harley Quinn and Batman in the "Suicide Squad."
"They both realize it and decide to go on the CRAZIEST car ride ever, doing all these twists and turns to get the Bat off," Movie Pilot wrote. "Harley then tells him that she hopes he's got insurance. Batman then decides to stick a batarang in the back tires and the car swerves. Joker and Harley attempt to run but both get tied up and Batman takes the duo to Arkham Asylum."
HitFix, however, pointed out that Harley Quinn's "Suicide Squad" film origin story is part of DC's New 52 series origin rather than the original "Mad Love" version by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm.
To most fans, this is a very big gaffe because the reboot origin story makes the choice for Harley Quinn to become one of the super villains as the Joker's rather than Harley Quinn's. Essentially, had "Suicide Squad" followed "Mad Love" Harley Quinn would have been even more kick-ass.
Still, public response to Robbie's Harley Quinn is not all bad. Yahoo! reported that among the happy viewers is "Clerks" creator Kevin Smith, who gave his daughter and "Yoga Hosers" actress Harley Quinn Smith with a version of Robbie's "Suicide Squad" baseball bat. The Hollywood Reporter relayed that Kevin Smith's daughter, in fact, wants to follow in Robbie's footsteps and play DC's Harley Quinn one day.
