Before becoming a renowned internist in New York City, Dr. Vincent Pedre was just as normal as most people are. He had a bad stomach that always left him suffering from digestion problems, which made him weak and sickly. He later found out that he is suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) a chronic stomach disorder that affected almost 10% of Americans.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the colon. According to MayoClinic.org, this is usually characterized by abdominal cramping or pain, being bloated, diarrhea, and constipation. And since this is a chronic condition, people who have it will need a long term management to correct the problem.
After years of suffering from IBS, Dr. Pedre finally figured out that his diet was the one thing that kept him feeling sick. He started to cut down on his gluten and dairy intake and it surprisingly lessened his symptoms.
Years later, a much wiser Pedre used his own experiences growing up to be able to help his body heal from the inside. He developed the Gut C.A.R.E Program, which is a movement that combined both Eastern and Western practices both in functional and integrative medicine.
The program has an amazing track record which was one of the reasons why Dr. Pedre is the doctor that he is today. Now, he made a huge leap to share his practice to everybody through his book Happy Gut.
The book gives the readers a step by step explanation about the The Gut C.A.R.E -Cleanse, Activate, Restore and Enhance- which removes food that may prompt an attack, eliminate those harmful pathogens and replace them with good probiotics and nutrients that will help heal the stomach.
Instead of taking medications to relieve patients of the symptoms, he explained the step by step approach to tackle the condition to restore health and to address other health problems their body may be experiencing.
When asked by the NY Times why he wrote the book, he said he wanted to reach and help as much people with gut problems as possible and he feels that through his book is will be able to do that. He also said that while working with people suffering from gut issues, he realized how this condition can affect so many aspect of health.
When asked about what a happy gut to him is, he said," A happy gut is a gut that is able to do all of the work of digestion. It has a healthy microbiome, it's able to extract all the nutrients you need from your food without causing any pain, discomfort, bloating or distress, and it creates a bowel movement at least once a day."
Max Lugavere for Yahoo Health also asked Dr. Pedre if it is possible to have an unhappy gut without even knowing it? Can absence of symptoms take place? He said that yes, it may be possible for a certain individual not to have symptoms of a gut problem, however it will mostly manifest in other gut-related conditions.
An example Dr. Pedre gave was a patient who have hives, and there were no traces of any environmental exposure through a routine skin test. It was finally discovered that she has food sensitivity to gluten (wheat) that increased the permeability of her stomach and later on led to the reaction.
