An openly gay man was diagnosed with a 'chronic condition' due to his sexual preference of homosexuality, NBC Los Angeles reported Saturday.
Matthew Moore, 45, was surprised to find his sexual orientation listed under chronic conditions after completing his routine checkup recently.
According to Moore, he was surprised by this diagnosis of "homosexual behavior (302.0)" and after looking up the medical code 302.0 online, he and found "it's sexual deviancy or mental illness, and that code has been removed or suggested heavily to not be used since 1973."
Moore then confronted the physician, who is based in Southern California and who Moore refused to name, regarding the incident. The doctor said that his homosexuality was classified under chronic conditions because gayness is still considered a disease.
Although Moore is not planning on filing a lawsuit against his physician, he shared his thoughts on the issue saying that he is most upset with the fact that gay people are still being judged for their preferences.
After Moore filed a complaint, he received a response from the Torrance Memorial Physician Network. The said letter contained assuring words that claimed to reject the notion of homosexuality as a chronic condition.
Moore also received a $30 refund on the co-payment he made for his medical visit.
Earlier this year, Moore started seeing a new doctor which suggested he needs to undergo a routine checkup. The tests revealed that he is B-12 deficient and was also suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
As of late, Moore's attending physician has not yet commented on the issue and has not also publicly apologized from biased claims.
