Longtime fans of "Gilmore Girls" are over the moon when Netflix announced that it is hosting the reboot of the Stars Hollow series. However, one itty-bitty detail has caused many a "Gilmore Girls" fan's heart to sink. While Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel have confirmed returning to "Gilmore Girls" to reprise their mother and daughter role as Lorelai and Rory respectively, Melissa McCarthy has not.
The New York Daily News reported that fans are very unhappy that Melissa McCarthy will not be playing Sookie St. James. Through social media, fans have been trying to beg McCarthy to return to "Gilmore Girls." One fan even put up a petition to Netflix with change.org. The petition is called "Bring Melissa McCarthy Aka Sookie Back for Gilmore Girls Revival." Other strong reactions appealed to McCarthy to remember where she got to enhance her acting abilities.
The New York Daily News reports further that the four episodes, which are 90-minutes in length each, will not likely see McCarthy because of the "Ghostbusters" star's busy schedule. Besides her film commitments, McCarthy has a new show with her husband Ben Falcone and a new clothing line called Melissa McCarthy Seven7.
An earlier report by TV Line, pretty much said the same thing. "But given that Sookie's portrayer, Melissa McCarthy, has gone on to massive big-screen success (and even an Oscar nomination) in movies like 'Spy,' 'The Heat,' 'Bridesmaids' and the upcoming 'Ghostbusters' reboot, there's a very real possibility she won't reprise her role as the Dragonfly's bubbly chef (and Lorelai Gilmore's close confidante)," the news agency wrote.
Hollywood Reporter says that besides Graham and Bledel, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn and Keiko Agena have also confirmed for the "Gilmore Girls" revival. The show will also have Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, who were the original producers for "Gilmore Girls." Production company Dorothy Parker Drank Here Productions has also confirmed.
