World's First Mothers-to-Daughters Uterus Transplantation in Sweden

Becoming pregnant and giving birth to children are some of the precious moments in a woman's life. But, some women born without uterus or had their uterus removed due to some medical reasons lose their ability to become mothers.

Bringing rays of hopes in women affected with this occurrence, a team of doctors from Sweden have successfully performed the world's first mother-to-daughter transplantation.

A team of experts, including researchers, physicians and specialists from the University of Gothenburg reported two women in Sweden undergoing uterus transplantations Sept. 15 and 16 and successfully receiving wombs from their mothers.

Both the patients, in their 30's, lacked wombs - one removing the uterus for cervical cancer and another lacking uterus from birth.

According to a statement from the website, the doctors carried out both transplantations successfully and without any complications.

"More than 10 surgeons, that had trained together on the procedure for several years, took part in the complicated surgery" said, team leader Mats Brännström, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Gothenburg , in a statement. "Both patients that received new uteri are doing fine but are tired after surgery. The donating mothers are up and walking and will be discharged from the hospital within a few days."

The Sweden medical center is one of the three medical centers on womb transplant in the world. The other two are Turkey and New York in US.

Last year, a young woman in Turkey received a uterus from a deceased donor. The 21-year-old woman, Derya Sert was born without a uterus due to some developmental problems while she was in her mother's womb. The transplant, reported to be world's first successful operation was conducted by doctors at a University Hospital in Antalya, Turkey.
