More Siblings Mean Lowered Divorce Rates

A study in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution stated that having more siblings may help lower divorce rates by strengthening marriages.

Researchers from the Ohio State University who were involved in the study stated that each additional sibling of up to seven reduces the probability of divorce by two percent.

Doug Downey, co-author of the study and professor of sociology at the Ohio State University told sources from AJC that growing up in a family with siblings help you develop negotiating skills and positive or negative interactions.

If a person has siblings, it is more likely that he would learn how to consider other people's points of view and learn how to communicate with them through disagreements, Downy lamented.

According to the Science Daily, the researchers of the study interviewed 57,000 adults from in and around the United States from 1972 and 2012.

Results showed that each additional sibling provided protection from divorce, Downy told the Science Daily.

Several other factors like family ties, race, age at the time of marriage, educational attainment and socio economic status were analyzed to see whether or not they could have affected the results of the study.

Donna Bobbitt-Zeher told AJC that after taking these other factors into consideration, they still got consistent results.

This study therefore highlights the positive effects of having up to seven siblings but the researchers told AJC that this should not alarm parents with only one child.
