Two pet food brands issued a voluntary recall of its dry food products due to possible salmonella contamination, a source told WJHG.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Iams and Eukanuba, both made by Procter & Gamble were distributed across the United States.
Salmonella can cause sickness among animals who consume them and humans who handle tainted pet foods may also be susceptible to certain health risks, WJHG reported.
Procter & Gamble told WJHG that the voluntary recall is a precautionary measure particularly of foods distributed in states in the east and gulf coasts.
A recent press release by the US Food and Drug Administration said that pets infected with salmonella may experience lethargic symptoms like bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
The US FDA also warned that infected pets that are healthy may act as carriers of salmonella and may infect other animals or humans.
WJHG suggests that pet owners immediately contact their veterinarian if they believe their pets have been contaminated with salmonella.
Humans who may have contacted salmonella should watch out for symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever, the USFDA suggested.
